 Crime Genre Research

Why?

I chose the genre of crime because this is what my final project will be. I am looking to expand my understanding of the crime genre as a whole and learn more about how to create the dramatic effects seen in modern crime productions. I will use the following information while planning and filming my final project.

Context

This genre focuses on criminal acts and investigations by a detective of a crime, often a murder. It is ofter associated with other genres such as mystery, detective fiction, drama, thrillers, horror, and many more. It began in the early 1800's with some of the most famous authors/poets, Steen Steensen Blicher and Edgar Allen Poe.

Techniques

Shots and angles are considered to be the most important film techniques used. As the crime genre is mostly based on the powerful and authoritative vs. the weak and vulnerable, angles have a lot to do with portraying these roles efficiently. Those with the authority are shot from lower angles to make them appear larger and more powerful. Whereas, those who are made to seem small and vulnerable are shot from a higher angle. This makes it appear as though they are being looked down upon by those in power.

Marketing

These films are other marketed the same as other modern films; via social media and advertisements. However, in order to market specifically toward those who would be interested in this genre, they will be promoted in places where other crime, horror, or thriller-like productions are shown. For example, television, radio, or podcast stations that discuss crime.

Example

Knives Out is an example of a well known crime movie that was released in 2019. It is considered a crime/mystery/thriller that focuses on figuring out who murdered a novelist. In this movie, there are many different angles that help to show positions of authority and vulnerability.
