Activity 3.13

For this assignment, I am supposed to evaluate character types and deepen my understanding of Propp’s character types. This will help me to choose how to present my characters while planning the final project.

  • In activity 3.7, I analyzed the show Peaky Blinders. In this show, there are hero and villain character types that are explained by Propp. However, in this show, it is not clear who is who. The protagonist is Thomas Shelby, and the Antagonist is Oswald Mosley. Due to this set up of the show, you would think Shelby is therefore the hero and Mosley is the villain. However, when you really consider the characters and their interests, Thomas Shelby would be considered the true villain, as he has committed the vilest acts.
  • The limiting factors of Propp’s theory would depend on the story line to fit with the character types. The characters in Peaky Blinders do fit the molds that Propp created; however, not in the obvious or standard way he may have intended characters to be presented. This is because there are good and bad, but it is subjective, and it is up to the viewer to decide who they believe to be the “true” hero and villain. Although it is subjective, it is obvious the producers wanted the audience to side with Thomas Shelby because he is emphasized the most and he is made out to be not only the main character, but also the man who everyone wants to succeed.
